The Art of Healing

There’s a difference in how patients see their cancer journey, just like there’s a difference in Cancer Centers.  When Sue Robbins began treatment for breast cancer in the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Desert Regional Medical Center, her life was already filled with responsibilities. “I have a husband and three children,” explains Sue.  “Even though we were dealing with cancer, life had to go on.”

That philosophy became the inspiration for a photo collage Sue created in the Lenscape Project, one of several complementary medicine classes at the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Lenscape is a form of art therapy in a supportive group setting. Participants are given disposable cameras so they can take photos that express their journeys while coping with cancer. They combine the photos into a collage to share with family members and other patients.

“Of course, I took photos of my parents, children and husband,” describes Sue. “I also love plants and flowers, especially the beautiful wildflowers we have here in the desert, so they were part of my collage. When I participated in the Women Running Wild event to fight breast cancer, I photographed the pink balloons that were released at the finish line.”

Appropriately, Sue entitled her collage “Life Goes On.”

“It is our mission to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support for patients and their loved ones every step of the way,” says Anita Chatigne, PhD, Director of Psychosocial Services at the Comprehensive Cancer Center.  “Programs such as Lenscape allow patients to chronicle and share their cancer experiences.”

Another Lenscape participant, NeddaJoy Lentini, found the experience so positive that it rekindled her interest in photography. “I photographed the Oncology/Radiation sign at the Comprehensive Cancer Center because I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. But I also photographed my refrigerator because I love to cook,” recalls NeddaJoy.  Coming from Monterey, California, NeddaJoy was inspired by the desert landscape. “I appreciated the beauty of the mountains and climate here during my treatment, so they are part of my collage as well.” She named her artwork “I Dream of Flying” because it is her dream to accomplish everything she was put on earth to achieve.

There’s a difference in Cancer Centers. The Lenscape Project is just one of a variety of workshops, classes, lectures, seminars, counseling sessions and support groups available to cancer patients, family members and caregivers.
