Spine Program
Back pain represents one of the most common reasons for missing work and for visiting a doctor. In fact, one half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.
The good news is that 90% of people with back pain will get better within four weeks and only 5% will remain disabled longer than three months. The key is having a good diagnosis followed by proper treatment.
The Team Approach At the Institute of Clinical Orthopedics and Neurosciences we’ve created a special Spine Care Program designed specifically for back pain patients. It reflects our vision that a core group of dedicated and trained specialists, working together, can provide faster recovery and improved outcomes for these patients.
Each member of our physician team is board-certified, with special training in spine disorders. Our team also includes a clinical coordinator who will facilitate your care, as well as specialists in neurology, pain management, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, physical therapy, psychology, and psychiatry. These specialists work together, as needed, on each case to determine the best course of treatment.
Our Program Our Spine Care Program has developed a diagnostic and treatment protocol that reflects the input of our specially-trained team, incorporating the latest evidence-based medicine and research as well as relevant literature from the medical community at large. We do this because we believe in providing care proven, over time, to be beneficial to patients; care that is more likely to ensure your satisfaction with your treatment and outcome.
Patients participate in an initial assessment and are then referred to Spine Program practitioners, as appropriate, for treatment. Patients see only those specialty practitioners relevant to their recommended treatment plan, streamlining patient care for optimum, timely recovery.
Our treatment plans start with conservative methods of back pain management such as anti-inflammatory drugs, heat and cold therapy, special exercises, or massage. If pain does not resolve using conservative methods, surgery may be recommended using minimally-invasive techniques for fewer complications, less pain and a faster recovery and return to normal activities.
Our Spine Board To ensure the quality of our assessment and treatment protocols, our Spine Program specialists meet bimonthly to present summaries of individual cases. These meetings are open to any physician in the community who has a patient with a spine complaint and wants to confer with experts in the field. Reviewing these cases ensures that patients receive comprehensive care that utilizes the best recommendations of all team members while providing a collaborative experience for physicians in our community. Recommendations become part of each patient’s record and copies are sent to the referring physician for insurance pre-authorization if a treatment plan is recommended.
Workers Comp Patients Patients injured on the job present a special area of Spine Program expertise. As employers, you want your employees to receive fast, appropriate care so that they may recover fully and get back to work as soon as possible. Our initial spine assessment ensures that your employees get only the treatment they need, with no unnecessary visits. Both you and your employee will receive developed plans, timelines, and goals for recovery and return to work. And even though surgery may be a last option, if surgery is necessary, we’ll recommend it up front—no endless delays or lengthy treatments that cost time and money without showing improvement. And we’ll communicate your employee’s progress with you every step of the way.
