At Desert Regional Medical Center, new technology allows for:
- Faster and more accurate diagnoses
- Minimally invasive treatment options
- Reduced hospital stays
- Faster recovery times
New innovative diagnostic and treatment technology available at ElMirador Imaging Center at DRMC includes:
3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
This technology offers top-quality image clarity, allowing improved visualization of abnormalities. It is also faster than earlier MRIs – in fact, sharper images are obtained in about half the scanning time. With the highest level MRI on the market today, this system can provide detailed images in the following areas:
-
Brain
-
Functional Imaging (on moving parts)
-
Spine
-
Orthopedic (hip, knee, foot, ankle, elbow, shoulder, wrist)
-
Prostate
-
Pelvis
-
Abdomen
-
Specialized vasculat and cardiac applications
Other benefits of this system include comfortable patient positioning, clear images even with fidgety children or patients with tremors; enhanced imaging of the spine to clearly show disk herniation, spinal cord lesions, nerve impingement, and more; and highly accurate pre-surgical planning.

GE Discovery PET-CT
Desert Regional Medical Center and its Comprehensive Cancer Center provides a PET-CT Center on it campus in Palm Springs. This system integrates a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner with a multi-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and is capable of 2D and 3D imaging with a larger bore for all patient studies or sizes. This Discovery ST system provides physicians with more sensitivity, speed, resolution, and diagnostic confidence when treating cancer patients.
The Discovery PET-CT assists physicians in seeing disease and planning radiation therapy treatment. The system shortens scan times as well as provides improved image quality in both 2D and 3D modes.

New innovative diagnostic and treatment technology available at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at DRMC includes:
Stereotactic Radiosurgery
A precise, highly-focused form of radiation therapy used primarily to treat tumors, inoperable lesions, blood vessel abnormalities and other brain abnormalities.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Breast Biopsy
This form of biopsy is less invasive than conventional surgical biopsy and is both safe and accurate. Benefits for women include less scarring and tissue damage, reduced cost and procedure time, and a faster recovery.
Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
A more precise delivery of radiation therapy that combines both scanning and radiation capabilities. IGRT can precisely track a tumor’s changes, movement, and position and modify the radiation field in real time. The tumor is more accurately targeted and healthy surrounding tissue spared. IGRT also allows for higher doses of radiation which decreases the likelihood of tumor recurrence and has the potential for less treatment toxicity for the patient.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
IMRT is an advanced type of radiation therapy that allows the intensity of the radiation beam to conform to the three-dimensional shape of the tumor. By controlling the intensity, physicians can focus a higher radiation does directly to the tumor while sparing surrounding tissue. Higher, more effective doses inhibit tumor recurrence and have the potential for less toxicity for the patient.

New innovative diagnostic and treatment technology available at Desert Regional Medical Center includes:
64-Slice Computed Tomography (CT)
This diagnostic scanning device provides improved imaging, greater detail and better views of the shape, size and position of soft tissue structures, including coronary arteries.
Off-Pump Cardiac Bypass Surgery
This form of surgery is also known as “beating heart” surgery. It is performed without stopping the heart during the bypass procedure. It has potential benefits which include less trauma, fewer potential complications from restarting the heart such as stroke, reduced hospital stay, and faster recovery than conventional coronary bypass surgery.
Gender Knee Replacement Surgery
Desert Regional Medical Center is proud to offer gender-specific knee replacement surgery. Conventional implants are made primarily for men, but the gender knee prosthetic is designed for women, offering a custom designed shape and a thinner profile to provide more natural movement.
Minimally-Invasive Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery
The anterior, or front approach to hip surgery requires only one small 3” incision in the upper thigh. A specially-designed operating table helps provide greater support, control and precision for the surgeon. Many patients take their first steps the same day as surgery! Benefits of this method of hip replacement surgery include reduced trauma to leg muscles, less scarring, and a faster recovery and return to activities.
